A Grim Briefing
After a handful of minutes, they were ready.
Renk cleared his throat. âI am now downgrading our alert level from likely to encounter the enemy to unlikely. However, this does not mean that any of us should drop our guard yet. Weâve only been on Redemption a few hours now, and weâve only scratched the surface regarding what we came out here to do. This is why I am gathering all of you together now. Under normal circumstances, I do not withhold crucial information from the personnel that serve with me. Everything I know, my Squad leaders and Fire Team leaders soon find out. The keywords as to why information was kept secret are two: focus and paranoia.
âDuring the altercation on Valhalla, it was discovered that the Roaches could pick up thoughts and images from humans who were having casual conversations or even engaging in prayer rituals. In other words, the Roaches use telepathy and the people of Valhalla had no idea they were being spied upon. It has been theorized that the Roaches either hid inside of or very near where these colonists buried their shit in order to catch their thoughts and gain information from them. The Roaches were then able to project unknown visions into the minds of the colonyâs children. The children were lured out and murdered. This was done in such a way that the entire colony was provoked into launching a very uncoordinated and ill-equipped assault. The Roaches lured the colonists to an ambush point, where they virtually wiped the colony out. Upwards of seventy of the original one hundred-plus colonists perished.
âFrom all indications, the Roaches were planning to use these same tactics repeatedly. However, the Roaches were not able to tap into the thoughts of the Marines who were sent out to investigate the reason the colony was no longer in contact with CP-2 (Command Post Two, on planet Paradise) or CP-1 (Command Post One, on Earth). These Marines later mounted a successful counterattack against the Roaches. This is where the keyword Focus comes in. The Roaches cannot penetrate our sustained focus.
âMoving on to Redemption, we come to the second keyword; Paranoia. The colony of Redemption made up the largest group of people ever to be transplanted from Earth and onto a new planet. The colony was over one thousand people strong. Each of these people was a member of the Earth-side church known as The Flock Of The Great Redemption. The church was based primarily in Arizona and New Mexico in the United States. On Earth, as well as on this planet, they were under the official leadership of one Reverend Joseph Balmore. Several scandals popped up involving this church. Inevitably, these scandals pointed to wrongdoing on the part of Balmore. The scandals ranged from misuse of church funds, attempts at bribing public officials and various well-publicized affairs with married women from his congregation.â
âHe sounds like a real winner, Staff Sergeant.â One of the Marines commented.
Renk continued. âOn Earth, Balmore was smart enough and persuasive enough to weasel his way out of all of these scandals.
